A Funny Mistake

Where
There is a sign on the arcade near Karashima Park.

The signs
No smoking andLitterinng Zone

The first question to be discussed is “No smoking andLitterinng Zone”. First of all, I would like focus attention on “the mistake of the Space”. “The space” is very important when we make a sentence in English. Sentences are not beautiful if “the space” is nothing. That can make a word understandable for separating with a space. The method for writing English is a fundamental thing. If we don’t use “spaces”, sentences are not grammatical and we don’t understand meanings.

andLitterinng Zone” is not correct. This has three mistakes. The first is “space”. It follows from what has been said in the previous paragraph that this is not correct. The second is “a spell mistake”. The third is “collocation”. The question which we must consider next is “a spell mistake”. We will begin by considering the spell mistake.

The problem is a spell mistake of “Litterinng”. This is the present particle. The original form of “Litterinng” is “litter”. “Litter” means leaving things in a place, and making it look untidy. If the original form changes the present particle, we have to add “ing” to “litter”. So the correct answer is “Littering”.

There remains a third question: that is a collocation problem. “Littering Zone” is not a collocation. Why? BNC did not describe the collocation of “Littering Zone”. Both of them interact badly. So we are tempted to use “littering” as a single body.

Correct answer
No Smoking and Littering

It should be concluded, from what has been said above, that the correct answer is right. This case had three problems, and it was very interesting problem. The point is that this case had “the mistake of the space” and “the spell mistake” and “the collocation”.
